Look again at that speck. Everything you were ever bothered by happened there — and the speck is on loan.

This volume runs a single camera move. It opens at the widest possible setting — the first light, the furnaces, the scattered atoms — and closes in, scale by scale, until it is pointed at one specific person: a sapiens born in Kraków in 1980 who was carried across a closing border as a baby and ended up making things at a screen four decades later. Then the camera pulls back out, past the family and the fictions and the web of cousins, until the person is a mote again.
The eight volumes before this one were arguments. This one is a location — yours, told through one example. Where the earlier books sent an anonymous witness ahead to watch, here the witness finally turns around. It has a face. The face is the point: a zoom is only worth taking if there is something specific at the bottom of it.

There is a film, made in the seventies, that starts with a couple on a picnic blanket in Chicago and pulls the camera straight up: ten metres, a hundred, a thousand, until the city is a smudge, the Earth a marble, the solar system a diagram, the galaxy a fleck. Then it falls back down, past the blanket, into the man's hand, into a cell, into an atom, into the restless nothing inside a proton. Every frame is ten times the last. The whole of everything, and one specific afternoon, on the same ladder.
This book is that move, run once, honestly, on a real person. The person is the one who made it — which is not vanity but availability: he is the single sapiens whose records I could actually get. A mother's handwritten account of a birth and an escape. A timeline of villages and rented flats. A portfolio of twenty years of work. From those, one example of everyone.
The argument, if a zoom can have one, is simple and runs the length of the ten sections: the thing at the bottom of the camera move — the person, with the name and the funk and the grievances — is made entirely of the thing at the top. Stardust that learned to draw borders. What you do with that fact is the only part that was ever up to you.
Everything that would ever be — every atom later conscripted into a person with opinions about traffic — was, at the start, a single unbearably hot smear with no inside and no outside. Not an explosion into space; space itself unfurling. There was no “where” for it to happen. It happened, and “where” was one of the things it made.
For the first slivers of a second there were no atoms, no stars, no you, no borders — only energy too hot to settle into anything as slow as matter. Then it cooled, the way everything cools, and the first light broke free and streamed out in all directions. That light is still arriving. You are standing inside the afterglow of the beginning.
Roughly nine in every ten atoms in existence are hydrogen — one proton, one electron, the least a thing can be and still be a thing. It is the raw stock from which everything more interesting was later machined: the water in you, the fuel of every star, the first ingredient of the first cell, all waiting in this humble default.
There is a lesson in the abundance. The universe is overwhelmingly the simplest available option, and the complicated things — carbon, iron, opinions, you — are rounding errors. To be complicated is to be rare, and, as the next frames show, expensive: something had to pay for it, in the only currency stars accept, which is their own death.
Gravity wants to crush a ball of hydrogen to a point. The hydrogen, squeezed hot enough, fights back by fusing — jamming protons into helium and releasing a flare that pushes outward. For most of a star's life these two enormous forces are exactly matched, and the result of that violent stalemate is the calmest thing you know: sunlight, arriving on time, warming a blanket.
This is the first furnace in the chain that ends at you. Every heavier element — the calcium in your bones, the iron in your blood — was cooked in a stellar core like this, one fusion step at a time, over patient millions of years. The log reads like an industrial process because that is exactly what it is.
Fusing hydrogen to helium is easy. Getting from helium to carbon is not: it needs three helium nuclei to collide almost simultaneously, a coincidence so unlikely the universe should be nearly carbon-free. It isn't — because of a precise energy resonance in the carbon nucleus that lets the third collision stick. Without that narrow window there is no carbon, and no chemistry rich enough to bother being alive.
Fred Hoyle predicted that resonance must exist, reasoning backwards from the plain fact that he was made of carbon and so it had to be possible. He was right. He also spent decades insisting the universe had no beginning at all — the “steady state” — and there he was wrong, spectacularly and in public.
A star builds heavier elements in nested shells — helium, carbon, oxygen, neon, silicon — each fusing hotter than the last, each buying a little more time against gravity. But every element up to iron releases energy when it fuses. Iron does not. Fusing iron costs energy instead of yielding it. The furnace has reached a step it cannot afford.
When a massive star fills its core with iron, the stalemate breaks. Nothing is left to push back against the crush. In the span of a heartbeat, the core that took millions of years to build collapses. Everything the star will ever be worth is about to be spent at once — in the next frame.
The collapsing core rebounds and the star detonates, briefly outshining an entire galaxy. In that violence, elements heavier than iron are forged and flung across light-years: the debris of one death becomes the raw material of everything after. A supernova is not only an ending. It is the universe's delivery mechanism.
The poster version — “we are stardust” — is true, and slightly too tidy. Much of the gold in a ring, and the heaviest atoms in you, were likely made not in a classic supernova but in the collision of two neutron stars: the corpses of stars, smashing together, spraying jewellery across space. Either way, you are wearing the wreckage of catastrophes.
Scattered stellar debris drifts for ages, then a passing shockwave nudges a cloud of it to collapse. Most falls together into a new star — ours — and the leftover crumbs, enriched with hard-won heavy elements, spin into a disk. The Sun lit up about 4.6 billion years ago as a second- or third-generation star, which is precisely why the system around it could contain something as element-rich as a planet, or a person.
A pure first-generation star is almost all hydrogen and helium; it cannot host chemistry, let alone biology. You needed earlier generations to live and die first, salting the neighbourhood, before your kind of complexity was chemically possible. Your existence is booked on the back of ancestors you will never count — and the oldest of them were stars.
In the leftover disk around the young Sun, dust stuck to dust, pebbles to pebbles, rocks to rocks, a slow snowballing that ended with a few planets sweeping their orbits clean. One, at the right distance, kept liquid water. Its heavy iron sank to the centre and began to churn, and that churn threw up a magnetic field — an invisible shield that would, billions of years later, keep the air from being stripped off above a picnic blanket.
None of this was aimed at you. There was no plan for Poland, or Kraków, or one specific March morning at the centre of this volume. There was gravity, chemistry, and vast amounts of time doing what they always do. The rock is not a stage built for the drama; it is only where the atoms happened to settle — and that turned out to be enough.
Zoom all the way down to a person now — the target of the whole camera move. A body is a temporary arrangement of about seven octillion atoms, and not one is yours in any lasting sense. The carbon was forged in a dead star; the oxygen you are breathing will be inside someone else within weeks; the calcium in your teeth will outlast your opinions by billions of years. You are less a thing than a pattern the atoms are holding for a while.
Here the Stoic joke begins, and it runs to the last frame. If you are a passing eddy of borrowed exploded-star matter, briefly convinced it is a person with a schedule, then the traffic jam enraging you is one arrangement of atoms being delayed by another. The fury is real. It is also, from four frames up, extremely funny.
That is the section's whole argument folded into one body. Hydrogen from the beginning of time; carbon from a star that died before the Sun was lit; iron from a core that ran out of road; gold, perhaps, from two dead stars colliding — all of it gathered, by nothing that intended you, into a warm arrangement that can read this sentence. Roughly seven octillion atoms, none of them “yours,” most of them older than the Sun, held in one shape for one lifetime.
The witness has stood at the bottom of every frame here, looking up. Now, for the first time, it notices a single pale point of blue light, very far away — too small to be anything, surely. It is a mote. It is where the rest of this book takes place. The camera has finished its long fall inward. From here, the zoom begins to turn around.
Roughly three and a half to four billion years ago, on a planet still deciding whether to keep its oceans, there was a population of cells we now call the Last Universal Common Ancestor. Not the first life, and not a single individual — a community, a way of being alive that worked. Every organism that has ever been studied, from the bacterium in your gut to the whale in the deep to the oak outside, reads its instructions in the same chemical language, punctuated the same way. That shared grammar is the fingerprint of a common origin.
This is the second borrowing, after the atoms. The first frames handed you matter from dead stars; this one hands you a method — a self-copying chemistry that has never once stopped since it started. You did not invent being alive. You inherited it, unbroken, from a cell that died before the continents had names.
A cell is, before anything else, a decision about where the world stops and you begin. A thin oily film — a membrane two molecules thick — draws a line and declares one side inside. Chemistry that would otherwise drift apart is now kept together, concentrated, able to build on its own work. Every living thing is a bag that troubles to stay a bag.
You are still that trick, elaborated. Your skin, your gut lining, the wall around every one of your cells: all descendants of that first refusal to dissolve. The border in §VII — the passport, the nation — will turn out to be an imitation of this one, drawn in the imagination instead of in oil. Keep the difference in mind. This first edge is real; most of the later ones are agreed.
The instructions come in a chemical script of four letters — the bases we shorthand as A, T, G and C — paired and stacked into the famous twist. The order of the letters is the message; the double strand means each half can rebuild the whole, which is why the copying can go on forever. Read end to end, your own copy would run to billions of letters, most of it inherited verbatim from ancestors you will never picture.
It is tempting to call this a blueprint, a program, a book of you. Be a little careful. It is closer to a recipe than a plan, and a recipe read by a kitchen that talks back — the same letters do different things in different cells, at different times, under different weather. You are not decoded from the text. You are cooked from it, once, live, and never exactly repeatably.
Around two and a half billion years ago, tiny blue-green cells learned to run on sunlight and, as a by-product, exhaled oxygen. Oxygen was, to almost everything then alive, a poison. It rusted the iron out of the oceans in banded red layers you can still read in the rock, and it drove countless lineages to extinction in what may be the largest die-off the planet has known. It also, eventually, made large, hungry, fast-moving life — you — possible.
This is the pattern the whole book keeps meeting: the disaster and the gift are the same event, seen from different distances. What killed the old world built the ground you stand on. Every breath you take is spent on a molecule that was once the worst thing that had ever happened.
Life could have gone on copying itself flawlessly forever. Instead, a great many lineages took up a stranger method: pool two sets of instructions, cut and splice them together, and hand the shuffled deck to something new. Sex is expensive and slow and requires finding somebody, and yet it wins, because the shuffle keeps a step ahead of everything trying to eat you from the inside. Variety is the oldest defence.
It is also the reason you are singular. Your particular arrangement — half from one line, half from another, cut in places no one chose — has a vanishingly small chance of ever recurring. The frames ahead will trace those two lines back through named grandparents and unnamed cousins to the same African cradle. For now, only this: you are not a copy. You are a deal.
The mitochondria that power your muscles and brain were once free-living bacteria. One ancient cell swallowed another and, instead of digesting it, kept it — and the two struck a bargain so old it is now invisible. The guest still carries its own small loop of DNA, a separate line of inheritance passed down almost entirely through mothers. You are not one organism. You are a working truce between two, running since before there were animals.
It is a useful thing to remember when you feel most like a single, sovereign self. The engine in the room was borrowed. The self you defend is a committee that learned to speak with one voice — and the vote was taken two billion years before you were asked.
Multicellular life is a second truce, stacked on the first. Cells that could have gone their own way instead specialised and stayed — some to sense, some to move, some to digest, some to reproduce on behalf of all the rest. An animal is a colony that has forgotten it is a colony. It has a front and a back, a mouth and a gut, a direction it faces the world. So do you.
The trillions of cells you call yourself are nearly all evolutionary dead ends: only a few will ever pass anything on, and the rest labour and die so those few can. It is the most thorough cooperation in nature, and you experience it as simply being one person. Hold that lightly. The unity you feel is real, and it is also a great many small lives agreeing to be spent.
Somewhere in the Cambrian seas a small swimming animal stiffened its body along a rod and discovered it could dart. That rod became a spine: a row of near-identical segments, each a variation on one part, strung into a flexible line. It is the signature of the vertebrates — fish, frog, lizard, bird, you — and it is why your body is built the way it is, in repeats, from vertebrae to ribs to the bones of your fingers.
There is an economy in it that runs through the whole of life and, later, through the whole of this book: find one thing that works, and reuse it. The letters of the code, the segments of the spine, the frames of this volume — all the same trick. Ten of a thing, a hundred of a thing, one idea worked until it holds a person up.
The five-fingered limb is not a human design; it is a fish's fin, rebuilt for land some three hundred and seventy million years ago, and lent since to every creature with an arm. The eye — a lens throwing the world upside down onto a screen of light-sensitive cells — was worked out in the sea and carried ashore. When you reach out and look, you are operating equipment far older than your species, tuned by ancestors who never knew what it would one day hold or read.
This is the last of §II's borrowings, and it sets up the whole rest of the camera move. The hand that will, in later frames, sign a name, draw a border, and hold a small blue mote is a modified fin. The eye that will look up and find the dot is a repurposed patch of ancient sea. Everything you will do with them, you do with inherited tools.
Every ancestor you have, all the way down to that first cell, had at least one child. This is trivially true and quietly staggering. Across an unimaginable span — through the oxygen catastrophe, five mass extinctions, ice and impact and famine — not one link in the chain that leads to you failed to reproduce before it died. You are the living end of a relay that has never once been dropped.
The camera holds here, in the quiet, before it turns to the human part of the story. There is a temptation to read triumph into the unbroken line, as if you were the point of it. Resist it gently. The line is unbroken toward you only because you are the one looking back along it; every cousin lineage that ended sees no line at all. You are not the winner of the relay. You are one of the countless places it happens to still be running.
The camera has fallen all the way in — from the cosmos, through the cell, to the animal — and here it stops on a place: the great rift running down the east of Africa, where grassland met woodland and a particular ape learned to stand, to sweat, to carry, to wait. For most of the human story there was nowhere else. The species was African for far longer than it has been anything else, and the body you live in was tuned there — the long legs, the bare cooling skin, the upright walk that freed the hands.
It matters to say it plainly, because the frames ahead will braid in nations and names and a specific family from a specific Polish village. All of that sits on top of this. Before anyone was Polish or Canadian or British, before there were countries to be from, there was this valley, and one animal in it, and you are that animal wearing later clothes.
The genus Homo is a few million years of experiments in being upright and brainy. Walking on two legs came first, long before the large brain — it freed the hands to carry and make, and the making seems to have fed the brain, which roughly tripled in size. It was not a straight climb toward you; it was a bush of human kinds, most of them now gone, of whom only one line, ours, remains. The others were not failed drafts of us. They were their own animals, and they lived.
Notice the trade already running through the story: nothing is given without a price. The upright walk narrows the pelvis, so human babies are born early and helpless, which makes the long childhood, which makes the learning, which makes the culture — the whole imagined world of §VII. The bad back and the terrified newborn are the fee for the hands and the mind. You are still paying it.
The control of fire may be the most consequential thing our ancestors ever did. Cooking unlocked more energy from the same food, effectively pre-digesting it, and paid for the expensive brain. But the hearth did something else, quieter and just as large: it made a centre. People gathered at the light, faced each other, and stayed after dark — and in that lengthened, protected evening, the talking that became story and plan and memory had room to grow.
This is the second border in the book, after the cell's membrane, and the first one made of nothing but agreement and warmth. The ring of firelight says inside and outside without a wall. Every later enclosure — the house on Camberwell Road, the line at the Polish frontier, the outline of a nation on a map — is a descendant of this: people deciding together where the warmth is, and who is at it.
At some point our ancestors began to do the strangest thing any animal has done: make one thing stand for another. A handprint for I was here. A notch for a count. A grave with flowers for this one mattered. A bead worn for who I am. None of it is food or shelter or safety directly; all of it is a mind treating a mark as a message. Language is the same trick run at speed — sounds standing for things, strung into worlds that are not present and may not be real.
Hold onto this frame; §VII depends on it. The symbol is the seed of every fiction humans live inside — money, nations, brands, law, the refugee stamp in a passport. All of them are handprints on a wall: marks a group has agreed to let mean something. The power is astonishing and the danger is exactly the same size. A species that can agree that a line on a map is real can be stopped at it, or shot at it.
The mitochondria from §II carry their own small loop of DNA, passed down almost only through mothers. Follow every living person's maternal line back and the lines converge on one woman — nicknamed Mitochondrial Eve — who lived in Africa perhaps a hundred and fifty thousand years ago. It is a real and beautiful fact. It is also almost universally misunderstood, so it earns a flag.
She was not the first woman, not the only woman of her time, and not alone. Thousands of women lived alongside her, and you descend from a great many of them too — just not in an unbroken mother-to-daughter chain. Her line is simply the one maternal thread that happened not to break. Every other woman's daughters, at some generation, had only sons, and the mitochondrial line went quiet. Eve is a statistical vanishing point, not a lonely first mother in a garden.
The genetic record suggests our ancestors passed through one or more sharp bottlenecks — stretches when the breeding population shrank to a few thousand, small enough that every human alive today is unusually closely related for a species so widespread. Chimpanzees in a single forest carry more genetic variety than our entire species does. We are, genetically, a recently near-extinct animal that got lucky and spread.
There is a strange comfort in the smallness. The whole of humanity — every language, every nation of §VII, every face in §V — funnels back through a crowd you could fit in a large village. The differences that later feel so total, so worth dying over, were printed onto a population that had only just survived. We are close cousins pretending, most of the time, to be strangers.
Beginning perhaps seventy thousand years ago, bands of these Africans walked out — along coasts, across land bridges, over ice — and within a few tens of thousands of years their descendants were in Europe, across Asia, out to Australia by boat, and finally down the whole length of the Americas. There was no plan and no destination. Each generation simply lived a little further on than the last, until there was scarcely a habitable place without a human in it.
This is the widest point of the human map, and it sets up the turn to come. In §IX the camera will pull all the way back out and show this whole spreading species as a single blue point of light. For now, only the walk itself: one African animal, carried by nothing but generations, arriving everywhere. The frontier your family was stopped at in 1981 is a line drawn across ground that this walk had already crossed, freely, long before anyone owned it.
Europe and Asia were not empty. Neanderthals had lived in Europe for hundreds of thousands of years; Denisovans ranged across Asia. When the Africans arrived, the lines met — and, at least sometimes, had children who lived and had children of their own. The proof is in you: most people outside Africa carry roughly two percent Neanderthal DNA, and some populations carry Denisovan besides. The other human kinds did not entirely vanish. A thread of them continues, quietly, inside us.
So even the word same in this section needs its flag. We are one species now, yes — but that one species is itself already a braid, with strands of vanished cousins woven in. This is the deep-time rehearsal for §IV, where a single Polish surname turns out to be a knot of Polish, Lithuanian and Ruthenian threads. Purity is not merely rare in the human story. At the level of the genome, it never existed at all.
Set against the four billion years behind us, the peopling of the Earth is almost too fast to see: a few tens of thousands of years to go from a single African region to every continent but the deep Antarctic. Deserts, rainforests, tundra, high mountains, remote islands — the same animal, endlessly adjusting its tools and its stories rather than its body, made a home in all of them. It is the most thorough colonisation of a planet by a single large species that we know of.
And everywhere it went, it stayed the same animal underneath. The kit changed — kayaks here, camels there, snow houses, stilt houses — but the builder did not. This is the fact the last frame of the section will insist on, and the fact §VII will spend ten frames complicating: the human differences that feel so deep are almost all in the kit and the stories, not in the animal. We are one species with ten thousand costumes.
Here is the section folded into one sentence: every person now living is descended from Africans who walked out within the last hundred thousand years, and the whole species is so genetically close that two strangers from opposite sides of the planet differ by almost nothing. The visible differences — skin, hair, the shape of a face — are a thin, recent surface, evolved mostly as bodies met different amounts of sunlight over a few tens of thousands of years. They are real, and they are the thinnest paint on the deepest sameness.
Race, as a system of sharp human kinds, is not written in that biology; it is a story laid over it, and a recent one. That does not make it powerless — §VII is entirely about how imagined stories move real bodies through real borders. But it does locate it correctly. The line between two humans is always shallower than it looks, and always more recent. You are looking, in every face, at the same African animal, wearing the local weather and the local story.
Siemaszkiewicz. The root carries an old Slavic given-name; the ending — -kiewicz — is one of the most telling suffixes in the region, a patronymic form that spread across the old Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, worn by Poles, Lithuanians, Belarusians, Ruthenians, and Jews alike. It is not a badge of one pure people. It is a seam where several met — the linguistic fingerprint of a borderland that was, for centuries, everyone's crossing-place. The name you sign is a small map of mixing.
This is the whole thesis of the section, stated in a single word before the section properly begins. The frames ahead will lay out four geographic threads — Polish, wider-European, North-American, British — as if they were separate. They were never separate. The name already knew. A lineage is not a clean line handed down; it is a knot that was tied long before you, out of strands that had themselves been knotted.
The camera, which fell from the cosmos to the cell to the African plain, keeps falling — and lands here, in Jaworsko, a village in Małopolska, in 1951, the world your grandmother's generation was making in the hard years after the war. This is where the particular thread of this book is anchored: not in an abstraction called Poland, but in a real place with a church, a few houses, mud in spring, a name in a parish register. The great story only ever happens somewhere this small.
It matters to name the place precisely, because §V will fill this village with people — Wiktoria, the christening, the house that hosted it — and §VI will follow one child born of it all the way to a desk in Kraków where these words are typed. Deep time needed billions of years and a whole planet. A life needs only a village and a date, and then everything that a village and a date can lead to.
Poland is the clearest lesson in Europe that a border is a passing condition, not a permanent feature of the ground. Between 1772 and 1918 the state was carved up by its neighbours and simply erased — partitioned out of existence for a hundred and twenty-three years — while the people, the language, the churches and the villages carried on beneath the redrawn lines. Then it returned, moved west after 1945, and its edges have shifted repeatedly within living memory.
Hold this against §VII, where the same family is stopped at a border in 1981 as though the line were a law of nature. It is not. The people of this thread lived through their own country vanishing and reappearing, its frontiers sliding across the same fields like weather across a valley. The ground is real. The lines drawn on it are agreements — sometimes kept at gunpoint, but agreements still, and no older or firmer than the last men who redrew them.
The Polish thread of this family is not, at bottom, a genetic fact — the genes, as §VIII will show, scatter and dilute past recognition in a few generations. What actually passes down, hand to hand, is a culture: a language spoken at home, a faith and its calendar, a table with particular dishes on particular days, songs, a way of telling the story of the nation's sufferings, and yes, the odd inherited grudge. These are carried deliberately, taught, insisted upon, kept.
That is the honest shape of a heritage. Not a pure substance in the blood, but a relay of habits and meanings that a family chooses, generation after generation, to hand on rather than let drop. It can be picked up by an in-law, taught to an adopted child, lost by a grandchild who moves away. The Polish thread reached a boy in Québec because people carried it there on purpose — walked him to tutoring, kept the language at the dinner table — not because it was written in his cells.
The second strand is wider than Poland. A young woman goes to Paris in 1974 to work as an au pair; the family's story touches France, Austria, Italy, the whole restless middle of the continent that the escape route in §VI will later cross on foot. Europe is not a rack of separate national jars. It is one long-stirred bowl — Romans, Slavs, Germanic peoples, Jews, Roma, traders, refugees, armies, all moving across the same peninsula for millennia, marrying across every line anyone tried to draw.
The neat national identities feel ancient and are mostly recent — a couple of centuries of flags and anthems laid over thousands of years of mixing. To be European is, almost by definition, to be a blend that has forgotten its own recipe. The Paris year is one visible stitch of that: a Polish thread passing briefly through France, picking up a little, carrying it on. Multiply that by every ancestor and the idea of a pure national line dissolves entirely.
A graft is the right word for what happened in 1983. A family cutting — a boy of three, his parents, the language, the habits — was lifted out of Poland and bound onto a North American trunk: first Québec, French-speaking and Catholic and strange, then the wider anglophone world. A graft does not erase the cutting; it fuses two living things so that sap from the new trunk rises into old wood, and something grows that is neither purely one nor the other.
This is how most of the New World's lineages are made — not born of the soil but grafted onto it, cutting after cutting from everywhere. The boy grew in Canadian ground while keeping Polish wood; he learned French and English while Polish stayed the language of home. Nothing about this is unusual. It is simply visible here, dated and placed, where in most families it has been forgotten. Every American, every Canadian, is a graft if you go back far enough — and it is not far.
The fourth thread is barely two decades old. In 2005 the line arrived in London and stayed for twenty years — Camberwell, Turnpike Lane, Hendon, a ledger of addresses that §VI will read like tree-rings. Britain is itself a famously braided island: Celts, Romans, Angles, Saxons, Danes, Normans, and then the whole world arriving by ship and plane, so that adding one more Polish-Canadian thread to London changes nothing about the pattern and everything about the person.
This strand is thin because it is recent — a single lifetime's worth, not generations deep. But it is the strand in which most of the work of §VI was done, the city where a Polish name learned to build for the BBC and Google and the rest, and it is the vantage from which the whole braid is finally being written down. A lineage does not stop at the last generation. It is still being spun, right now, in whatever city you happen to have landed in.
The ancestry test is the perfect object for this section, because it takes the true and beautiful fact of human mixing and sells it back as a false precision. The pie chart — so many percent this nationality, so many percent that — is a marketing artifact, not a measurement of your soul. It works by comparing your DNA to present-day reference groups and to the company's proprietary panels; change the panel or the company and your percentages change with it. The categories are modern, fuzzy, and partly invented.
What the test cannot show is the thing this section keeps insisting on: that ancestry and genetics are different books entirely, and that going back only a handful of generations, everyone's tree collapses into a shared web (the whole business of §VIII). The honest reading of the tube of spit is not you are 41% Polish. It is you are a human, mixed like all humans, and here are a few faint statistical echoes of where some of your relatives recently stood. That is wonderful. It is also nothing you could put a border around.
Follow the braid outward instead of back and it explodes. Every one of your ancestors who had more than one child seeded a line of cousins that has been branching ever since, so that today you have thousands of relatives close enough to share a recent forebear — third, fourth, fifth cousins scattered across Poland, France, Canada, Britain, and everywhere the threads ran. You will meet almost none of them. Most you could not identify if you sat beside them.
This is the quiet, generous flip-side of the ancestry obsession. The point of tracing a line is usually to find who you belong to; the honest result is to discover how many people you already, invisibly, belong with. The section is called The Braided Line, but a braid seen closely is mostly the parts you cannot follow — the strands that dive under and reappear as strangers. §VIII will run the arithmetic all the way to its astonishing end. For now: the family is far larger than the family you know.
Here is the section folded shut. There is no pure lineage — not for this family, not for anyone. The Polish, wider-European, North-American and British strands do not lie end to end like a single inherited rope; they cross, double back, and tie into each other, and each of them was already a braid before it reached this book. A name that is itself a seam, a country that vanished and returned, a continent stirred for millennia, a graft onto a new world, a fresh thread in an old city — woven, not drawn.
This reframing is quietly load-bearing for the rest of the volume. If you are a knot rather than a line, then the questions of §VII — which nation are you really, which border is truly yours — lose their sharp edges, because the honest answer is all of them and none, mixed. And it sets up the largest claim of all, coming in §VIII: pull any human's threads far enough and they tie into everyone else's. You are not the neat last link of a chain. You are a knot in a net that has no edge.
